INITIATIVE 97 - Seattle's Divest from Israel
Initiative-Background and Update, Wed., July 9 @ 7:00 pm
at
Herzl Ner-Tamid
Conservative Congregation, 3700 E Mercer Way, Mercer Island
StandWithUs Northwest,
Herzl Ner-Tamid and
other
organizations are holding a meeting to give members, activists,
congregants and supporters background and a status update on Initiative 97, the
"Divest from War" initiative that wraps anti-Israel language in a thin veneer of
opposition to the war in Iraq.
The meeting is to answer the numerous questions we've received about Initiative
97. These questions include:
· Who is behind the "Seattle Divest from War and Occupation" group and what do they want?
· How does the initiative process work and how are the organizers doing in their signature-gathering efforts?
· Will I-97 make it to the ballot in November?
· What are we doing to stop or defeat it?
· Why was a lawsuit filed, and what was the meaning of its outcome?
· Is it true that the Democratic Party has endorsed I-97? (Quick answer - absolutely not).
· What happens next?
· And our very favorite: How can I help?
To answer these questions and more, we will have on the agenda:
· Don Stark, the political and marketing consultant to the No on I-97 campaign, has agreed to speak to us and answer questions. Don is a partner at the communications firm of Gogerty Stark Marriott.
· Reuven Carlyle, Democratic Party candidate for State Representative in the 36th Legislative District, will join us to talk about the attempt by supporters of I-97 to get the initiative endorsed by Democratic Party organizations and about the organized effort to defeat any such endorsement.
· Jeffrey Alhadeff, a teacher at Seattle Hebrew Academy, will talk about attending the court hearing on I-97 with his SHA class, about his perceptions of the hearing, and the effect the hearing had on his students.
· Rob Jacobs, Regional Director of StandWithUs, one of the organizations that have come together to fight this initiative.
Please join us at Herzl-Ner Tamid on Mercer Island on Wednesday
evening, July 9 at 7:00 PM.
To RSVP, please email
StandWithUs Northwest at
RSVP.Northwest@StandWithUs.com so we know how many to expect.

The directory includes the listings of local synagogues, day schools, and other important community institutions, such as listings for kosher establishments and other services provided to the Seattle Jewish community including individual and business listings. It is available for purchase with a minimum donation to the Mikvah of $10. SEWARD PARK ERUV COMMUNITY MEMBERS
Aside from an initial fundraising drive when the Eruv was first built, Bikur Cholim-Machzikay Hadath has almost solely underwritten the ongoing maintenance of the Eruv. It costs approximately $4,500 per year to maintain the Eruv. The Seward Park Eruv Committee is asking all members of the Seward Park Community to make a yearly minimum donation of $50 to help offset the costs of the Eruv. There are many families who were not offered the opportunity to donate to the Eruv when it was first built. This would give everyone, especially those who take advantage of the Eruv every week to help support its upkeep.
If you would like to make a donation, please send a check to the BCMH Office for the Seward Park Eruv or you can contact the shul office and pay by Visa or M/C. Thank you for your support.
